Mission

Thai Health And Information Services (THAIS), Inc.

is a community based organization whose mission is to enhance the quality of life of Thai individuals and families in Los Angeles County through the provision of culturally and linguistically appropriate health, mental health, and social services. Our programs are particularly directed to serving Thais who are low-income, monolingual and have been left out of social services in the past. We seek to involve Thais of all ages and backgrounds.

THAIS, Inc.’s activities range from the Thai teens to seniors’ programs.
In the past 15 years, THAIS, Inc. has developed and designed many programs to accommodate to the Thais lifestyles and environment. More than 5,000 Thai immigrants participate in our activities each year. THAIS, INC. was founded in 1995, and is a non-profit 501(c)(3)

History

The history of this organization goes back over fifteen years. Following a 2-year period of planning and organizing with the aid of four students from the School of Public Health at the University of California, Los Angeles and two Community Leaders, this organization began delivering health and information services to Thais after incorporation in 1995. Since its inception, THAIS, Inc. has continued to be the only community-based, non-profit organization in the working-class community of East Hollywood/Thaitown area which focuses on providing health and information services to the growing Thai community. Today, THAIS, Inc. provides needed health, information, and referral services to thousands throughout the Thai community in the Los Angeles area each year.

THAIS, Inc. has eight members on its Board of Directors, with four of these serving as officers in the positions of President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer. Two members of the Board are seniors who are each active participants in the Thai Senior Healthy Heart Project – I. There are five staff members in this organization. Two who are paid by THAIS, Inc., an Executive Director, and a Program Coordinator. Three additional staff members, all are Community Workers, are on loan from, and paid by the National Asian Pacific Center on Aging. The Executive Director directly supervises all four of the other staff members. THAIS, Inc. also has temporary youth volunteers from local high schools and two permanent volunteers which duties include Lead Consultant/Assistant Director and Information Technologist.

We have the organizational capacity to implement the proposed activities. Evidence of this may be found in our growth and in the experience of our staff. Our growth may be seen in the increasing numbers of Thais who are benefiting from our services. The three members of our staff who have the most longevity with THAIS, Inc. have a cumulative experience of nearly 35 years in delivering culturally and linguistically appropriate health, information and referral services. Our training consultant also does good work for us, and is able to assist in various projects. He has 30 years as a trainer, leader, and program manager.

Our capacity is further demonstrated by having successfully managed 15 grant programs during the past 5 years (2005- 2010). These grants have been awarded and funded by organizations such as Los Angeles Times Foundation, Asian Pacific Health Care Venture, Inc., EDS Corporation, First 5 LA, L. A., Maximus: Helping Government Serve People, Kaiser Permanente Foundation, March of Dimes, UCLA School of Public Health, The California Endowment, California Consumer Protection Foundation, USC San Diego Breast Cancer Research Program, Environmental Protection Agency Region IX.
